How to Flush a hot water tank

Flushing a hot water tank is an important maintenance task that helps remove sediment buildup, improving efficiency and extending the life of the tank. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to flush your hot water tank:

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Garden hose
  • Bucket (if needed)
  • Screwdriver or wrench (for the drain valve)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Turn Off the Power Supply

  • Electric Water Heater: Turn off the power at the circuit breaker.
  • Gas Water Heater: Set the thermostat to the "Pilot" setting.

2. Turn Off the Cold Water Supply

  • Locate the cold water supply valve at the top of the tank and turn it off. This stops water from entering the tank during the flush.

3. Connect a Garden Hose to the Drain Valve

  • Attach one end of a garden hose to the drain valve, usually located near the bottom of the tank.
  • Place the other end of the hose outside, into a floor drain, or into a large bucket.

4. Open a Hot Water Faucet

  • Open a hot water faucet in your home (ideally the one closest to the water heater). This prevents a vacuum from forming in the plumbing system, allowing the water to drain more easily.

5. Open the Drain Valve

  • Open the drain valve using a screwdriver or wrench. Let the water flow out through the hose until the tank is empty. Be cautious, as the water will be hot.

6. Flush the Tank

  • With the drain valve still open, turn on the cold water supply for a few minutes. This will stir up any remaining sediment and flush it out through the hose.
  • Continue flushing until the water runs clear, indicating that the sediment has been removed.

7. Close the Drain Valve

  • Once the water is clear, close the drain valve tightly and disconnect the hose.

8. Refill the Tank

  • Turn the cold water supply back on and allow the tank to fill. Keep the hot water faucet open to let air escape from the tank. Once water flows smoothly from the faucet, close it.

9. Turn the Power Supply Back On

  • Electric Water Heater: Restore power by turning the circuit breaker back on.
  • Gas Water Heater: Set the thermostat back to its normal temperature setting.

10. Check for Leaks

  • Inspect the drain valve and other connections for any leaks. Tighten if necessary.

Additional Tips:

  • Frequency: Flush the tank annually, or more often if you have hard water.
  • Safety: Be careful with the hot water during draining, and ensure you don't over-tighten the drain valve to avoid damaging it.

By following these steps, you can effectively flush your hot water tank, helping to maintain its efficiency and prolong its lifespan.
